Day 6, my reading list continues. November, 25th was the International Day for the elimination of violence against women and I‘m trying to bridge it together with December, 10th (International Human Rights Day) with a reading list on the subject matters of gender equality, support against violence and general awareness around sensitive topics. Today on my reading list…

Primahood: Magenta

Primahood: Magenta blends memoir and surrealism to tell the story of a bisexual mother raising her biracial daughter in a world fraught with restrictive gender roles and challenging racial politics.

There’s a beautiful review here, authored by Elena Goukassian and it’s hard to add anything to that.

Primahood: Magenta (sometimes referred as just Magenta) is a story about stereotypes and prejudice, both in terms of gender and race, and a powerful story at that.

When her daughter is insulted that other kids called her a boy, her mother’s response is: “Maybe you have to teach them there’s yet another type of girl.”

It’s hard to find a story that dives more deeply into the pre-created concepts we carry around with us and we instinctively transfer to our kids. What is suitable and not suitable for a girl. What is to be or not to be done.
