BIM and Digital Transformation: my roadmap for 2019

This is a personal post, for those who follow my research and work in the areas of BIM and digital transformation. I’m not even sure this is the most appropriate platform for its publication but this is what I have and this is where we meet, so I figured it had to be here.

These last four years have been incredible: we witnessed a huge transformation, here in Italy, and what has been nothing but thought and the work of few enlightened minds seems to have finally become a reality. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but Building Information Modelling is spreading and I love to think that my work had a small part in the big picture of things. It should be the time to reap benefits and consult the hell out of it. Alas, this is not going to be my path.

I could go sitting on a beach and marvel at the beauty of creation, but I’m not one to stand still. And if I look around me, there’s still lots and lots of work to be done. As per today, though, I’m no longer part of the professional endeavor we called Strategie Digitali. It’s the reason I haven’t been very active, from a social point of view, and you haven’t seen me in the few past events.

That being said, my professional profile is currently undergoing a metamorphosis towards new areas of the digital transformation I only barely touched before.

For starters, I have a couple of publications I want to get out before summer rolls out again:
– I’m tired of the way people develop their BIM execution plan and I’m working on something on that issue;
– I’m perfecting my skills as a facilitator in the Lego Serious Play method and I think we need some resources in Italian on that;
– I’m working on a couple of things that might result in a new book.

But of all the work I’ve done, three are the things I want to focus on:

1. Infrastructure. It’s one of the most critical segments of the AEC industry, we need better infrastructure to survive and this summer’s event should only teach us the importance of caring for our bridges, highways, railways. Alas, the poor guys do not even have categories, leave alone protocols, to bring BIM into their world. It’s time to change that.

2. Project Management. What good is a project if you don’t know how to manage it? I’m tired of directors having project management shoved down their throats: it doesn’t need to be boring stuff you never wanted to do, especially if you’re born as a designer. Architects are naturally-born problem solvers: let’s leverage that and bring into the BIM world project management techniques that go better with our natural inclinations. I’m confident I can help with that, if you give me the chance.

3. Education. The happiest moments of the last four years I reaped as a teacher. Education is like oxygen and not because of what you teach: because of what you study and learn in the process. My students are and always will be the most important thing: your protection, your growth, is sacred to me. You didn’t think I was really going to leave you, did you? I’m also cooking up some new stuff and I hope I’ll never stop doing that.

One: pursue the truth; two: learn something new.

But most of all, I want to give you something new. And in order to do that, I’m going to be away for a while. I’m currently working on carefully selected projects, while I’m developing the new stuff. I will be on temporary leave from my social media profiles (LinkedIn and Twitter), so I discourage you to use them as primary means of communication. Questo è un post personale, destinato a chi segue la mia ricerca e il mio lavoro negli ambiti del BIM e della trasformazione digitale. The English version is at the top of this page (la versione inglese è in cima a questa pagina). Non sono nemmeno sicura che quest sia la piattaforma più appropriata per la sua pubblicazione, ma questo è quello che ho e qui è dove ci incontriamo, quindi ho pensato che dovesse essere qui.

Questi ultimi quattro anni sono stati incredibili: siamo stati testimoni di una tremenda trasformazione, qui in Italia, e ciò che per lungo tempo non è stato che pensiero e lavoro di alcune menti illuminate sembra che oggi sia finalmente diventato realtà. C’è ancora molto lavoro da fare, ma il Building Information Modelling si sta diffondendo e mi piace pensare che il mio lavoro abbia avuto una piccola parte, nel complesso. Dovrebbe essere tempo di raccogliere i frutti. Ahimé, la mia strada non mi conduce lì.

Potrei stendermi su una spiaggia a contemplare le meraviglie del Creato, ma non sono capace di stare ferma. E se mi guardo intorno, c’è ancora davvero molto lavoro da fare. A partire da oggi, tuttavia, non sono più parte dell’impresa professionale che avevamo chiamato Strategie Digitali. È il motivo per cui non sono stata molto attiva, dal punto di vista sociale, e non mi avete vista presenziare all’ultima manciata di eventi.

Detto questo, il mio profilo professionale sta attraversando una metamorfosi verso nuovi settori della trasformazione digitale che in passato ho potuto solo sfiorare.

Per cominciare, ho un paio di pubblicazioni che voglio finalizzare prima che sia di nuovo estate:
– sono stanca del modo in vengono sviluppati i BIM execution plan e sto lavorando a qualcosa a riguardo;
– sto perfezionando le mie capacità come facilitatore nel metodo Lego Serious Play e penso ci sia bisogno di più materiale in italiano sull’argomento;
– sto lavorando a un paio di cosette che potrebbero risultare in un nuovo libro.

Ma di tutto il lavoro che ho portato avanti, voglio concentrarmi principalmente su tre cose:

1. Infrastrutture. E’ uno dei segmenti più critici nel settore delle costruzioni, abbiamo bisogno di infrastrutture migliori se vogliamo sopravvivere e recenti avvenimenti dovrebbero insegnarci l’importanza di prenderci cura dei nostri ponti, delle nostre autostrade, delle nostre ferrovie. Ahimé, questi poveri ragazzi non hanno nemmeno le categorie, per non parlare dei protocolli, per portare il BIM all’interno dei loro processi. E’ giunta l’ora di fare qualcosa a riguardo.

2. Project Management. A che cosa serve un buon progetto se la gestione è carente? Sono stanca di vedere project director cui i principi di gestione vengono fatti ingoiare a forza: il project management non deve necessariamente essere un complesso di attività che dovete fare ma non volete fare, soprattutto se nascete designer. Gli architetti sono risolutori di problemi, per natura: facciamo leva su quello e portiamo nel BIM tecniche di gestione del progetto che si sposano meglio con le nostre naturali inclinazioni. Sono sicura di poter aiutare in questo, se me ne date la possibilità.

3. Formazione. Da insegnante ho raccolto i momenti più felici degli ultimi quattro anni. Insegnare per me è come respirare e non per ciò che ho l’occasione di trasmettere: per ciò che ho l’occasione di studiare e imparare lungo la strada. I miei studenti sono e saranno sempre la mia prima priorità: la vostra protezione, la vostra crescita, per me è sacra. Non avete davvero pensato che vi abbandonassi, vero? Sto lavorando a qualcosa anche in questo ambito, e spero di non smettere mai.

Ma, sopra ogni cosa, voglio darvi qualcosa di nuovo. E, per farlo, sarò via per un po’.
