"All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered."

E le mani veloci nel gioco e la gente giocava con me

Tra le bianche tovaglie e i bicchieri,
sigarette, rossetto e champagne,
camerieri, posate e sorrisi
disegnati tra i tavoli e il bar,
c’ero io col mio numero nuovo
e la giacca di rosso lamè
E le mani veloci nel gioco,
che la gente giocava con me.

Fugge una carta, poi scivola via;
lungo i polsini è sparita.
Prestigiatore di un’altra magia,
che ci sembrava infinita;
che scherzo è la vita.

Ma la vita poi lascia di sale
ed il gioco è banale con te.
Una mano già trema un istante
e la gente capisce dov’è
che nascondi i colombi e gli affanni
e si vedono gli anni che hai.
E ti muovi e sorridi e fai danni;
hanno spento le luci e lo sai.

Fugge una carta, poi scivola giù;
tutti hanno visto dov’era.
Prestigiatore che non lo sa più
dov’è la bambola intera;
e scende la sera.

Fugge una carta, poi scivola e va;
dentro ai ricordi è sparita.
Prestigiatore che ancora non sa
che lungo il vento e le dita
ci scappa una vita,
ci sfugge la vita;
che scherzo è la vita.

Isaac Asimov’s Gold (and other stories)

It’s unfortunate that I’m coming to this after the very unsatisfactory collection of “fantasy” stories (Asimov never wrote fantasy: he wrote satire), because this was another disappointment. The book is half short stories and half non-fiction, for random reasons, and the non-fiction half is random writings
