Following the rejection I got to my query letter on Valentine’s Day, yesterday I got a much more polite one. Things are progressing fast and I need to move my ass because I’m running out of books to give my Patrons, especially since I endeavour to annotate some of them and to provide an original traduction to some others.

Today’s book is not annotated, but it’s the book that had me definitely fall in love with reading as a little girl. This little-known novel from Jules Verne has it all: adventure and pirates, survival, wit and daring escapes, with a flaming volcano to provide your much-needed dose of explosions.

What is it actually about?

Five individuals and a loyal dog find themselves swept away in a daring escape from the American Civil War: they’re Cyrus Smith, an engineer and leader; Neb, his faithful servant; Gideon Spilett, a reporter; Pencroft, a sailor; Herbert Brown, a young boy; and Top, their canine companion. They hijack a hot air balloon and are carried by the winds for thousands of miles, eventually crash-landing on a seemingly uncharted island in the South Pacific.

Stranded and facing the unknown, the group employs their diverse skills and knowledge to adapt and survive. Smith’s ingenuity shines as he devises tools, weapons, and shelter from salvaged materials. Neb’s resourcefulness proves invaluable in tending to their crops and animals. Spilett’s keen observation skills aid in exploration and discovery. Pencroft’s nautical expertise ensures safe travel around the island and its surrounding waters. Young Herbert, full of youthful curiosity, contributes with his enthusiasm and fresh perspective.

Dangers lurk in the form of wild animals, harsh weather, and the constant struggle for survival. But amidst it all, a mysterious benefactor appears to leave helpful tools and supplies at critical moments, fueling speculation about a hidden presence on the island.
