On this day in 1547, and not a moment too soon, Henry VIII dies in the Palace of Whitehall. Having killed two of his wives isn’t his only feat: during his reign, as many as 72,000 people were executed by boiling, burning at the stake, hanging, drawing and quartering, and ultimately beheading.
His dissolution of the monasteries caused the destruction and ruin of around 800 buildings, including their libraries, which has been dubbed “the greatest cultural loss” caused by the English Reformation. After cultivating the image of a Renaissance man, and successfully instating a court where arts and philosophy could flourish, he sent it all to shit for his own pride and greed.
